In Merida, I stayed at Hostel Zocalo, 125 pesos for a bed in female dorm. All backpackers are surprised with its unlimited breakfast buffet, with very nice bread and few sorts of fruit, also two cereals. They will make omelettes for u upon ur request without extra charge.
Zocalo in Spanish means main plaza, so there is a Zocalo in all the cities we have visited, so meaning the hostel is in a super good location, and the people working here are all very informational. Bus station is only a few blocks away.
The coast is just 40-50 minutes away by bus, so many people also spend one day in the beach. We met a college student from Mexico city and he brought us to a very nice cozy local restaurant.
